Egypt, Climate
Most of Egypt is a subtropical area, but the southern part of 'Upper' Egypt is tropical. The Egyptian interior is generally hot, Cairo temperatures ranging from January lows of between 7 and 29 Celsius to July ranging between 20 to 36 Celsius. Along the Mediterranean coat northern winds temper the Egyptian climate.
The average rainfall is only about 5cm a year, but sudden storms sometimes cause devastating flash floods. Precipitation often approaches 20cm a year on the Mediterranean coast. Strong, hot, dry tropical wind sandstorms, known locally as Khamaseen or 'Khamsin', blow off the western desert for 'fifty days' in spring (March). |
