Egyptian MoneyModern Egyptian paper currency ranges from the 25 Piastres the quarter pound note, right up to a 1,000 pound note. Egyptian paper currency is not the same size. The smaller the denomination of the note, the smaller its dimensions.
Egyptian coins duplicate the value of some of the smaller Egyptian banknotes. There are 25 Piastres and 50 Piastres coins, but because of this duplication, many establishments in Egypt rarely have coins. In fact, the value of 25 Piastres is so small that they are often difficult to find in either coin or banknote, and businesses often round up the price of merchandise to the nearest pound or give you a bon-bon!
Egyptian money is colourful and attractively designed. One of the secrets to any travel in Egypt is to carry plenty of small Egyptian banknotes. Carry loads of one pound, 25 and 50 piastre (half pound) notes. Though small banknotes sometimes seem hard to find, many hotels, particularly the larger ones, have resident banks where one may bulk up on these before setting out.
In many instances, taxi drivers and street merchants who sell small items will claim to be unable to make change for large banknotes, so being able to pay the exact amount is a distinct advantage. We also found small bills will be very handy for tipping. Keep in mind that the exchange rate in Egypt has widened in recent years. Today you may exchange GBP - Pounds Sterling for just about twice as many Egyptian pounds as several years ago. |
