Egypt - Red Sea Coast

The Egyptian Red Sea coast stretches from Sinai to the border with Sudan to the south. Situated within a few miles of each other on the Red Sea mainland coast are the resort areas of El Gouna, Hurghada and Soma Bay. One can pretty much forget budget accommodation in and around the expanding resort city of El Gouna north of Hurghada, and to the (for now) quieter and limited facilities at Soma Bay. Both areas are well worth a visit, but they were not really 'created' with the idea of budget travel in mind, more for the package holiday trade.

The Moevenpick hotel, El Gouna is a typical low cost accommodation, high quality hotel, used by UK travel companies. We know of people that stayed there and were quite pleased with the room, food and service.

Hurghada on the other hand seems to have been developed more for the budget traveler. Hurghada is a less expensive Red Sea scuba diving headquarters then Sharm el-Sheikh in the Sinai region and for many Europeans, particularly from the UK, Hurghada represents the probably the least expensive sun and fun beach and party resort available on the Egyptian Red Sea coast to them. In the rest of Egypt generally, three and four star hotels tend to be more established facilities that perhaps once had higher star ratings. In Hurghada, the newer hotels were specifically built with these star rating in mind.

All along the Egyptian Red Sea coast, for the most part, room rates for good accommodation are at prices you would expect to pay for lesser accommodation in Cairo and Luxor say.
