Egypt - Esna

Esna, Egypt is the location of one of the main locks
on the River Nile

Esna is about 30 miles / 55km south of Luxor. The town of Esna is the location of two barrage bridges straddle the Nile at this point. The earliest is one built by the British in 1906, and the more recent "Electricity Bridge" built in the 1990s and site of one of the main locks on the River Nile.

When these locks are closed, for any reason, it can mean Nile cruisers ferrying tourists from Luxor to Aswan, 155 km further upstream – can be held up for hours and changes in Nile Cruise itineraries at certain times of the year.

Esna TempleThe town of Esna is the site of the ancient Temple of Khnum, which has only been partially excavated, is about 200 meters from the river and some 9 meters below street level.

The other points of interest are: its lively tourist-oriented souk, which occupies a couple of streets leading inland from the river corniche and a smaller temple, dedicated to the triad of Latopolis (the Nile Perch), about 2.5 miles north of the town, at a village now called El-Dayr.
